Chat GPT Edu Usage Limits

Â鶹Æƽâ°æ provides ChatGPT Edu to faculty and staff with access to powerful AI capabilities while managing the university's shared AI resources responsibly.
Features and Included Allowances

Whats Included?

Every licensed ChatGPT Edu user receives:
  • Unlimited access to core ChatGPT features, including GPT-5.5 Instant(or the current "work horse" model), Search, Data Analysis, Canvas, Projects, GPTs, and Study Mode.
  • Included daily allowances for selected advanced features provided by OpenAI, which do not consume the university's shared credit pool.

These allowances are provided as part of your ChatGPT Edu license and reset automatically.

Additional Advanced AI Capacity

Many advanced AI features consume credits after the included daily allowances have been used..
Your monthly capacity is determined by your department.
If you require additional Advanced AI Capacity for research, instruction, or other university work, please contact your department to submit a request through the IT Service Portal.

Understanding the "Usage Limit Reached" Message

Some users may see a "Usage limit reached" notification within ChatGPT. This is a known issue that OpenAI is currently working to improve.
If you see this message:
  • You can continue using the standard ChatGPT Edu experience.You can continue using your included daily image generation and Deep Research allowances.
  • The message indicates that additional credit-based advanced AI usage is unavailable unless additional monthly capacity has been assigned to your account. 

OpenAI has confirmed that this notification may appear even though your standard ChatGPT Edu features remain available and is working to make the message clearer for end users.

Who gets access to Chat GPT Edu?

Licenses are available for individuals or departments who choose to purchase them. The education version offers enhanced capabilities tailored for academic and institutional use, providing more robust features, greater flexibility, and better value compared to the standard consumer license.

For those who have not purchased a ChatGPT Edu license, personal accounts (Free, Plus, or Team) remain unaffected and are still available to use. Please note, however, that these accounts are not approved for any sensitive or non-public data.

What if I already have a ChatGPT account?

  • If you were already on the Free Plan: You will be prompted to archive or transfer your existing chat history into the Â鶹Æƽâ°æ workspace upon logging in after accepting the invitation.  Content that is not migrated over will be deleted.
  • If you were already on the Plus or Pro plans: The next time you log in to ChatGPT, you’ll be prompted to choose how to transition your existing workspace. You’ll have two options:
    • Transfer existing chat history and GPTs - this will merge your current chat history and settings into the new Â鶹Æƽâ°æ–provided Edu workspace.
    • Export and delete your existing chat history - this will delete all content from your current account and will not migrate any data into your Edu account. However, it allows you to create a new personal account using the exported chats.
      • If you do not migrate your existing content when prompted, it will be lost and cannot be recovered. 
      • If you choose to export and delete, any custom GPTs you’ve created will also be deleted and unrecoverable.
Additionally, if you have a paid subscription, it will be automatically canceled when you join the Edu workspace, and you’ll receive a pro-rated refund.

Will my conversations be used to train ChatGPT?

No. Â鶹Æƽâ°æ’s agreement ensures that your data is not used to train OpenAI models or to improve their services.

Is my data safe?

Yes. Â鶹Æƽâ°æ’s ChatGPT Edu plan includes enterprise-grade data protection.
