Integrated Floodplain & Stormwater Management

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is managed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and aims to help provide flood insurance to individuals in the floodplain and provide minimum standards for floodplain management that state and local governments can then enhance as they see fit. However, the criteria under the NFIP are baseline standards that do not currently integrate or account for additional flooding caused by stormwater at a broad, national scale. This project begins by conducting an analysis of communities, both within and outside Virginia, whose floodplain management standards go beyond the requirements of the NFIP, with a particular emphasis on those requirements that incorporate stormwater management and mitigation efforts and regulations.
