Cardinal Registration for Health & Dental Insurance

What is Cardinal HCM?

Cardinal HCM (Human Capital Management) is the state's system for managing personnel. It is operated by the Virginia Department of Human Resource Management (DHRM) and named after the state bird.

Employees will use Cardinal HCM only for health benefits and flexible spending elections. All other benefits and deductions are processed viaWorkday.

Cardinal Registration

Employees must complete a one-time registration process and need two pieces of information for the registration:

  • Your Cardinal Employee ID: You can find this in Workday by selecting the Personal tab on your profile and viewing the IDs section. This is listed as your State Benefits ID (Cardinal). Please note that for new hires, it may take a few days after onboarding for this information to appear.
  • Your W&M email address (ending in @wm.edu only). Do not use your VIMS, Mason School, or Aid Data email address.

Please reference the when completing the registration. Keep the following in mind when you use the guide:

  • You should indicate that you are an active state employee.
  • W&M is a non-COV agency, so you will need to complete Step 22.
  • Workday is the system of record for information in Cardinal. If you need to update your name or mailing address, make these changes in Workday. Please note that it may take a few weeks for health vendors to reflect updated address information in their systems. For other data-related issues, please contact HR.
    • Address Change - Employees can update their own addresses by navigating to the Contact tab on their profile in Workday.
    • Legal Name Change - To initiate a legal name change in Workday the employee must navigate to the "Change My Legal Name" task. Fill in the appropriate information and submit their new social security card reflecting the name change. 

Once registered, you can return to to log in with your username and password.
