Accommodations

Student Accessibility Services will send out "Accommodation Letters" to faculty after the Add/Drop period has ended each semester. These letters will include information on what accommodations a student will expect to receive in class for the semester. However, it is the student's responsibility to discuss accommodations and accommodation logistics with faculty. If faculty members have questions about implementing accommodations, the SAS office welcomes contact by [[sas]] or by calling 757-221-2512.

Definition of an Accommodation

Accommodations are defined as any reasonable adjustment required for a student to have equal access to the university's programs and activities, inside or outside the classroom.

Accommodations do not include:

  • Substantial modifications to academic standards
  • Modification or adjustment of requirements essential to any program of instruction, program of activity, or essential to any directly related licensing requirement, or
  • Modifications or adjustments that result in undue hardship, considering the nature, cost, and impact of the accommodation and other factors
