Required Training for Researchers

To determine the trainings appropriate for you and your research personnel, please follow the directions outlined below depending on what research committee (IACUC, IRB, IBC) will review your protocol(s) and/or your funding source (e.g. NIH, NSF, etc).

Information about Training Requirements

  • Trainings must be completed before protocol can be approved. Courses through CITI expire after 4 years and must be retaken prior to receiving protocol approval.
  •  If you are listed as personnel on protocols for various committees/funded projects, please make sure to complete all the required trainings for each project.
  • External members can complete CITI trainings under W&M. They would follow the same instructions to create a CITI account as explained in the "About CITI" page.

Note: The links below can only be accessed by W&M faculty/staff with Box access.

Students and external members will need to request a PDF copy from their professor, principal investigator, or faculty mentor.

 Training Requirements for the IACUC

IACUC Training is required for researchers (student, staff, faculty) working with vertebrate animals in the laboratory or field who are submitting protocols to the IACUC.

 Training Requirements for the IRB

IRB Training is required for researchers (student, staff, faculty) involved in any human subjects research who are submitting protocols to the IRB.

Training Requirements for the IBC

IBC Training is required for researchers (student, staff, faculty) handling infectious agents, r/DNA,  and other biohazards who are submitting protocols to the IBC.

Federally funded grants, contracts, and cooperative agreements

Researchers may need to take additional training courses if their research project is federally funded. Training must be taken within 12 months prior to applying to grant opportunity.

Still unsure?

Complete the following survey to help you determine what trainings you need to take depending on your funding and research project.

Update: October 1, 2025:

1) CITI Questionnaire has been updated. First question will appear as a checklist for users to select which training (see table below) you need to add to your account.

2) Research Security Training is now completed through CITI (not Cornerstone). All personnel (students, faculty, & staff) are able to access the condensed version in CITI.
