The D.C. Summer Institutes are open to all current W&M undergraduates, including 2027 graduates,  in all majors and disciplines! There is no limit to the number of times a student can apply for the Institutes.

Students on academic probation during the time they are abroad are not eligible to participate in Study in D.C. opportunities. If you are on academic probation or on a medical withdrawal or underload, you must receive approval from the Office of Academic Wellbeing in order to participate in Study in D.C. opportunities.

Students who are on Disciplinary Probation or Deferred Suspension status are ineligible to participate in Study in D.C. opportunities during their first full semester in such status. If a sanction endures beyond one full semester (15 academic weeks), the student may petition the Office of Student Accountability & Restorative Practices for an exception. The Director, or designee, will make the final decision in consultation with Washington Center staff, and that decision will be final and cannot be appealed.

If you do not get approval, you may NOT participate in Study in D.C. opportunities. Students are required to report to the Washington Center any changes in academic or judicial status, even after acceptance into a program, which may affect their eligibility to participate in their accepted program, even if such a change results in a financial loss.

• In State: $3,500
• Out of State: $5,000

All students will be charged a $150 spring course fee and a $100 lunch fee to cover meals during the two week summer course in addition to the program fee.

*PLEASE NOTE: If you choose to live in housing provided by the W&M Washington Center, there is an additional non-refundable cost of $4,500** for a double room or $7,000** for a single room. Housing is optional and rooms are located within a shared space. Housing fee is subject to change based on market availability. There is a separate housing deposit of $1,800 due for all students wishing to take advantage of Center housing.

Financial Action Timeline & Dropping/Withdrawing from Your Institute
Your $1500 program deposits are non-refundable, with no exceptions. Housing deposits and fees are also non-refundable. Students who wish to drop from the program, at any time, should see the financial action timeline, below:

• Spring Drop Deadline: February 5, 2027
  • Dropping by this date will remove the Spring course registration and all other related charges. All Deposits Forfeited.
  • Dropping after this date will remove all other charges, but the Spring course fee will remain. All Deposits Forfeited.
• Housing Decision Due: March 1, 2027
• Housing Deposit Due: March 15, 2027
  • This deposit it non-refundable at the time of payment.
• Summer/Final Drop Deadline: May 21, 2027
  • Dropping by this date will remove all summer charges (with the expectation of housing charges) and unenroll students from their summer courses. All Deposits Forfeited.
  • Dropping after this date will result in ALL related charges remaining on student accounts and the student will be responsible for paying all fees associated with summer participation.
• Remainder of Housing Fee Due: ~June 1, 2027
• Remainder of Program Fee Due: ~June 1, 2027

In order to drop your D.C. Summer Institutes course, you will need to send an email from your W&M account to registrar@wm.edu, CCing Program Manager, Tyler Wilson, by the drop deadline at midnight. No other communication will be considered a formal drop request.

Students who want to withdraw from the course will be handled on a case by case basis. In order to withdraw your D.C. What Your Program Fees Will Cover
In addition to the academic credit you’ll receive from Â鶹Æƽâ°æ for completing the D.C. Summer Institutes, your fees cover:

• Faculty and staff salaries
• Program meals during orientation session
• A networking luncheon/dinner with D.C.-area alumni
