The D.C. Summer Institutes are open to all current W&M undergraduates, including 2027 graduates,  in all majors and disciplines! There is no limit to the number of times a student can apply for the Institutes.

Students on academic probation during the time they are abroad are not eligible to participate in Study in D.C. opportunities. If you are on academic probation or on a medical withdrawal or underload, you must receive approval from the Office of Academic Wellbeing in order to participate in Study in D.C. opportunities.

Students who are on Disciplinary Probation or Deferred Suspension status are ineligible to participate in Study in D.C. opportunities during their first full semester in such status. If a sanction endures beyond one full semester (15 academic weeks), the student may petition the Office of Student Accountability & Restorative Practices for an exception. The Director, or designee, will make the final decision in consultation with Washington Center staff, and that decision will be final and cannot be appealed.

If you do not get approval, you may NOT participate in Study in D.C. opportunities. Students are required to report to the Washington Center any changes in academic or judicial status, even after acceptance into a program, which may affect their eligibility to participate in their accepted program, even if such a change results in a financial loss.

• In State: $3,500
• Out of State: $5,000

All students will be charged a $150 spring course fee and a $100 lunch fee to cover meals during the two week summer course in addition to the program fee. If you choose to live in housing provided by the W&M Washington Center, there is an additional non-refundable cost of $4,500** for a double room or $7,000** for a single room. Housing is optional and rooms are located within a shared space.

*PLEASE NOTE: Students who wish to drop the spring class have until the drop deadline on 02/05/2027 at midnight to do so. If students drop by this deadline, the course fee will be removed, but students will forfeit their previously paid $500 deposit. Students who wish to drop the summer class have until 05/28/2027 at midnight to do so. Students who drop after the 05/28/2027 at midnight deadline will still be responsible for all fees.

What Your Program Fees Will Cover
In addition to the academic credit you’ll receive from Â鶹Æƽâ°æ for completing the D.C. Summer Institutes, your fees cover:

• Faculty and staff salaries
• Program meals during orientation session
• A networking luncheon/dinner with D.C.-area alumni

Dropping/Withdrawing from Your Institute
Your $500 deposit is completely non-refundable at any time. Housing fees are non-refundable at any time.

Students who wish to drop the spring class have until the drop deadline on 02/05/2027 at midnight to do so. If students drop by this deadline, the course fee will be removed, but students will forfeit their previously paid $500 deposit. Students who wish to drop the summer class have until 05/28/2027 at midnight to do so. 

Students who drop after the 05/28/2027 at midnight deadline will still be responsible for all class fees. 

In order to drop your D.C. Summer Institutes course, you will need to send an email from your W&M account to registrar@wm.edu, CCing Program Coordinator, Tyler Wilson, by the drop deadline at midnight. No other communication will be considered a formal drop request.

Students who want to withdraw from the course will be handled on a case by case basis. In order to withdraw your D.C.
