Letters & ME (Mentoring Early)

Through Opportunity Flourish AmeriCorps Program's Letters & ME, you will support infants and toddlers in partnership with Child Development Resources and/or preschools and their families in partnership with York County Head Start.

Infant & Toddler Family Services Liaison - 300 hours 

Letters & ME Infant & Toddler Family Services Liaison & Mentor supports the development of young children aged six weeks old to three years by offering support to families and caregivers. The Infant & Toddler Family Services Liaison & Mentor works with families and caregivers in center and home-based services. This includes planning, coordinating, and attending family engagement events which may occur during center hours or out-of-school time hours (on weekends and evenings).

Commitment:

Member will serve at the Minimum Time level (300 hours at approximately 10-12 hours per week) during the academic year (September through May).

  • Three weekly mentoring shifts between 9 am - noon, M-F for 20 weeks of programming throughout the academic year
  • Weekly reflection or coaching sessions
  • Four family engagement events (aftercare hours, evening, and/or weekends)
  • Complete training plan which includes onboarding and periodic training throughout, up to 60 hours.
  • Plan and participate in 9/11 and Martin Luther King, Jr. Days of Service

Responsibilities include:

Direct Service 55%

  • Build relationships, collaborate with, and provide culturally responsive support to families to support their child’s growth and positive development
  • Assists with in-person/virtual home visits
  • Communicate with families through phone calls, emails, texts, etc.
  • Educate families on the importance of their involvement in center-based activities, such reading to their child’s class, chaperoning field trips, and participating on the policy council, etc.
  • Recruit families to participate in engagement activities
  • Participate in Days of Service (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day & 9/11)
  • Participate in family engagement events (aftercare hours, evening, or and weekend)

Preparation & Support 25%

  • Assist with planning and logistics for family engagement events
  • Collect data on participant engagement and progress including recording data in data management system(s)
  • Improve participation in family engagement events
  • Market family engagement events and activities through communications and attendance at community events
  • Record mentor notes after each session
  • Participate in bi-weekly reflection and coaching sessions
  • May drive a W&M van or personal vehicle to and from service site(s)

Training 20%

  • Complete training plan which includes onboarding training as well as periodic training throughout the service term, up to 60 hours

Preschool Family Services Liaison & Mentor - 300 hours 

The Letters & ME Family Services Liaison & Mentor provides support to young people ages 3-5 primarily through family engagement programming and activities and participates in in-class activities to promote literacy, self-regulation, and positive self-identity. The Family Services Liaison will serve during traditional school hours as well as out-of-school time hours (on weekends and evenings) to support family engagement.

Commitment:

Member will serve at the Minimum Time level (300 hours at approximately 10-12 hours per week) during the academic year (September through May).

  • Three weekly mentoring shifts between 9 am - noon, M-F for 20 weeks of programming throughout the academic year
  • Weekly reflection or coaching sessions
  • Four family engagement events (aftercare hours, evening, or and weekend)
  • Complete training plan which includes onboarding and periodic training throughout, up to 60 hours.
  • Plan and participate in 9/11 and Martin Luther King, Jr. Days of Service

  • Provide culturally responsive literacy support in small group instruction and utilize appropriate group management strategies 
  • Implement, assess, and adapt session plans for each assigned child

  • Participate in Days of Service (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day & 9/11)
  • Participate in four family engagement events (aftercare hours, evening, and/or weekend)

Social Emotional Learning Content Lead & Mentor - 300 Hours 

Letters & ME Preschool Social-Emotional Lead & Mentor will develop the social emotional skills of three-, four- and five-year-olds in partnership with their families, providing support in the areas of self-regulation and positive self-identity. They will deliver social emotional support, tutoring, and prosocial activities during the traditional school day or aftercare hours and participate in family engagement activities.

Commitment Required:

Member will serve at the Minimum Time level (300 hours at approximately 10 hours per week) during the academic year (September through May).

  • Three weekly mentoring shifts between8:30 am - noon, M-F for 20 weeks of programming throughout the academic year
  • Weekly curriculum prep meetings
  • Bi-weekly reflection and coaching sessions (one meeting a week)
  • Complete training plan which includes onboarding on periodic training throughout the service term, up to 60 hours.
  • Plan and participate in 9/11 and Martin Luther King, Jr. Days of Service

 Responsibilities include:

 Direct Service 45%

  • Participate in approximately three weekly sessions as a mentor and tutor during the traditional school day (including after-care) 
  • Provide culturally responsive literacy support in small group instruction and utilize appropriate group management strategies
  • Provide curriculum to support youth’s social and emotional development in whole group instruction
  • Implement, assess, and adapt session plans for each assigned child
  • Assist Mentors by troubleshooting issues that arise during programming

Preparation & Support 35%

  • In consultation with experts, develop and deliver high-quality social-emotional programming
  • Plan and facilitate weekly curriculum prep sessions
  • Record and review mentor notes after each session, escalating those items requiring additional support and attention
  • Prepare and/or oversee the preparation of materials needed for social emotional programming
  • Participate in weekly reflection or coaching sessions
  • Plan and participate in 9/11 and Martin Luther King, Jr. Days of Service
  • May drive a W&M van or personal vehicle to and from service site(s)

Training 20%

  • Complete year-long training plan which includes assigned training on curricula and the developmental needs of young children and their families, up to 60 hours

Literacy Content Lead & Mentor - 300 Hours 

The Letters & ME Literacy Content Lead & Mentor will develop the literacy skills of three-, four- and five-year-olds in partnership with their families. They will deliver high-impact literacy, tutoring, and prosocial activities during the traditional school day or aftercare hours. They will serve as a central point of communication to support mentors in their facilitation of literacy content. In addition, Letters & ME Mentors also support occasional family engagement activities.

Commitment Required:

Member will serve at the Minimum Time level (300 hours at approximately 10-12 hours per week) during the academic year (September through May).

  • Three weekly mentoring shifts between 9 am - noon, M-F for 20 weeks of programming throughout the academic year
  • Weekly reflection or coaching sessions
  • Plan and facilitate weekly curriculum prep sessions with mentors
  • Complete training plan which includes onboarding on periodic training throughout the service term, up to 60 hours.

Mentor & Support Specialist - 300 Hours 

The Letters & ME Mentor & Support Specialist will develop the literacy and social emotional skills of three-, four- and five-year-olds in partnership with their families as well as provide logistical and family engagement support to the preschool program.

Commitment Required:

Member will serve at the Minimum Time level (300 hours at approximately 10-12 hours per week) during the academic year (September through May). In addition to maintaining regular office hours, the member will participate in:

  • Three weekly two-hour direct service (mentoring) shifts between 9 am - noon, M-F for 20 weeks of programming throughout the academic year
  • Weekly reflection or coaching sessions
  • Two family engagement events (aftercare hours, evening, or and weekend)
  • Complete training plan which includes onboarding on periodic training throughout the service term, up to 60 hours.
  • Plan and participate in 9/11 and Martin Luther King, Jr. Days of Service

 Responsibilities include:

Direct Service 50%

  • Participate in approximately three weekly sessions as a mentor and tutor during the school day 
  • Provide effective social-emotional curriculum and culturally responsive literacy tutoring to preschool children 
  • Implement, assess, and adapt session plans for each assigned child
  • Assist Mentors by troubleshooting issues that arise during programming
  • Plan and participate in 9/11 and Martin Luther King, Jr. Days of Service

 Preparation & Support 30%

  • In consultation with staff, develop and deliver materials and programming to support children and their families, including managing logistics and materials
  • Collect, record, and manage data on participant engagement and progress 
  • Assist program communications with internal and external partners
  • Participate in weekly reflection or coaching sessions
  • Plan and participate in 9/11 and Martin Luther King, Jr. Days of Service
  • May drive a W&M van or personal vehicle to and from service site(s)

Training 20%

  • Complete training plan which includes onboarding on periodic training throughout the service term, up to 60 hours.

Infant & Toddler Mentor - 100 Hours 

Letters & ME Infant & Toddler Mentor provides support to young children ages six weeks old to three years old in early childhood care with social emotional skill development. They deliver social emotional support and prosocial activities during the traditional school day or aftercare hours. In addition, the Letters & ME Infant & Toddler Mentor may also support occasional family engagement activities.

Commitment Required:

Member will serve at the Abbreviated Time level (100 hours at approximately 4 hours per week) during the academic year (September through May).

  • Two weekly mentoring shifts between 9 am - noon, M-F for 20 weeks of programming throughout the academic year, including prep and supervision for each session
  • Weekly reflection or coaching sessions
  • Complete training plan which includes onboarding on periodic training throughout the service term, up to 20 hours.
  • Plan and participate in 9/11 and Martin Luther King, Jr. Days of Service

Responsibilities include:

Direct Service 55%

  • Provide effective social-emotional curriculum and culturally responsive literacy tutoring to infants and toddlers
  • Implement, assess, and adapt session plans for each assigned child
  • Participate in one weekly session during the traditional school day or after-care
  • Participate in one family engagement event (aftercare hours, evening, or and weekend)
  • Participate in two weekly sessions during the traditional school day or after-care
  • Participate in 9/11 and Martin Luther King, Jr. Days of Service

Preparation & Support 25%

  • Complete mentor notes after each session
  • Participate in weekly reflection or coaching sessions
  • Attend weekly curriculum prep sessions
  • Collect data on participant engagement and progress including recording data in data management system(s)
  • Adequately prepare for each lesson, which might include reviewing lessons, picking out appropriate activities, making copies, gathering manipulatives
  • May drive a W&M van or personal vehicle to and from service

 Training 20%

  • Complete training plan which includes onboarding on periodic training throughout the service term, up to 20 hours.

Preschool Mentor - 100 Hours

In addition, Letters & ME Mentors also support occasional family engagement activities.

  • Complete training plan which includes onboarding on periodic training throughout the service term, up to 20 hours.

Responsibilities include:

 Direct Service 50%

  • Provide effective social-emotional curriculum and culturally responsive literacy tutoring to preschool children during one weekly session during traditional school day or after-care
  • Participate in two weekly sessions during the traditional school day or after-care
  • Continually assess and adapt daily plans and overall progress to ensure each child’s target outcomes are met
  • Plan and participate in 9/11 and Martin Luther King, Jr. Days of Service

Preparation & Support 30%

  • Complete mentor notes after each session 
  • Participate in weekly reflection or coaching sessions
  • Attend weekly curriculum prep sessions
  • Collect and record data on participant engagement and progress 
  • Adequately prepare for each lesson, which might include reviewing lessons, picking out appropriate activities, making copies, gathering manipulatives
  • May drive a W&M van or personal vehicle to and from service

Training 20%

  • Complete training plan which includes onboarding on periodic training throughout the service term, up to 20 hours. This includes completing assigned training on curricula and the developmental needs of young children and their families during the early childhood years

Qualifications

Required:

  • Citizenship or permanent residency status (Green Card)
  • High school graduate or GED certification
  • 17 years of age or older
  • Pass the Criminal History Check

Preferred:

  • Experience or interest in working with young people
  • Driver’s License

Education Award and Living Allowance

For 300 hour members:

  • Education Award estimated, based on 2025-26: Minimum Time: $1,565.08
  • Living allowance: $4,050

For 100 hour members:

  • Education award, estimated, based on 2025-26 Abbreviated Time: $416.17
  • Living allowance: $1,375
