Garry is a graduate of Catawba College (BA Theatre) and the University of Mississippi (MFA-Directing). He has worked professionally with Walt Disney World, Arena Stage, Mac-Haydn Theatre, Seaside Music Theatre, North Shore Music Theatre, Oxford (MS) Shakespeare Festival, Mark Two Dinner Theatre, Chattanooga Theatre Centre, Surfside Playhouse, Signal Mountain Playhouse, The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, Chattanooga State Community College and the Professional Actor Training Program, Arts-Based Collaborative at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and Costumes, Unlimited. In his career he has served as a director, costume designer, props master, set designer, technical director, producer, playwright and educator. The SOutheastern Theatre Conference honored Garry's commitment and body of work in the field of theatre for youth and family with the Leighton F. Ballew Award for Graduate Study in Directing. As an undergraduate student at Catawba, he co-created a touring children's theatre troupe which became a marketing and recruitment tool for the school and theatre department. While a graduate student, he helped to shape the operational structure of the summer only Oxford Shakespeare Festival as well helped to establish the foundation for a student led production company that operated independently of the school. He is a certified Wolf Trap Arts Integration Teaching Artist and has completed several residencies in classrooms of early learners helping the educators learn strategies for implementing theatre technique and understanding in an effort to better teach literacy, science, math and social/emotional skills. For the last 20 years he served as the Founding Executive Artistic Director for the Ensemble Theatre of Chattanooga (ETC) an independent semi-professional regional theatre focusing on productions produced in intimate, found and created spaces. Ensemble Theatre of Chattanooga produced close to 130 productions in 20 years ranging from large scale musicals and Shakespeare to cutting edge modern dramas and world premieres (of both plays and musicals) and theatre for youth and family. In addition, ETC launched a podcast (LIGHTS UP!) during the pandemic as a pivot to keep producing and creating and the podcast has five seasons with 50+ episodes featuring more than 35 playwrights from all over the world. An international component of ETC allowed the theatre to participate in a rolling premiere of staged readings of exiled Belorussian playwright Andreyev Kuriechik play VOICES OF THE NEW BELARUS and an international exchange of plays with Dmytro Ternoviy's Teatr na Zhukakh in war-torn Ukraine amidst the Russian invasion. For its efforts in redefining the theatrical experience in Chattanooga, ETC was featured in an American Theatre Magazine article published in September 2013. Garry is excited to be joining the faculty and staff of the College of William And Mary's Department of Theatre and Dance.
