A Path in Pedagogy: Caitlyn Whitesell (HISP '20) Teaches Spanish and ESL Locally and Abroad

Caitlyn Whitesell (HISP '20) served as a Cultural Ambassador in Galicia, Spain (2023-2024)Caitlyn Whitesell is a 2020 Hispanic Studies graduate with a Master's degree in Bilingual Education from the School of Education. She lives in Charlottesville, VA, and she teaches ESL at Piedmont Virginia Community College and at an elementary school in Albemarle County Public Schools. Since graduation, she has taught ESL and Spanish virtually and in-person in Chesterfield, VA, Lexington, VA, and Tarrytown, NY. Additionally, she participated in the in A Fonsagrada, Galicia, Spain to build on her ESL / EFL teaching experience.

During her trajectory in HISP, Caitlyn took advantage of our study abroad program in Cádiz, and served as an undergraduate Teaching Assistant. Her blended her training in Psychology, Linguistics, and Hispanic Studies to analyze how language may affect the way bilingual individuals (English & Spanish) experience emotions. Caitlyn's academic excellence in HISP was recognized with the Merritt Cox Award.
