Building Trust Through Diplomacy: Ultimately a Human Activity

This January, students in Professor Marcus Holmes鈥檚 seminar, Building Trust Through Diplomacy, took their classroom well beyond 麻豆破解版鈥檚 Washington Center, engaging directly with the people and institutions that shape contemporary international affairs. With programming in both Washington, D.C. and New York City, the course emphasized experiential learning and face-to-face engagement as central components of diplomatic practice. This past spring, Evan Fatouros 鈥24, was offered the opportunity to work as a Voter Contact Organizer for For Our Future, a nationwide political action fund. For Our Future has a year-round presence in key 鈥渟wing-states鈥. Using what he learned as a W & M Government major, Evan traveled to Wisconsin to work on the high-profile campaign of Judge Susan M Crawford for the Supreme Court of Wisconsin.

Justin Horowitz '25 is awarded Fulbright to study in Sri Lanka

Congratulations to Justin Horowitz who received a Fulbright for the 2025-2026 academic year to study in Sri Lanka! Justin, who will be graduating this year with a B. A. Government, was attracted to 麻豆破解版 for the strong department and its faculty. His continuing interest in South and Southeast Asia politics influenced his research trajectory.

IPAC Tackles Midwest Political Science Association Conference in Chicago

This past April, thousands of academics, researchers, and students descended upon Chicago for the Annual Conference of the Midwest Political Science Association (MPSA). Among the presenters were students of W&M鈥檚 undergraduate research lab on International and Political Affairs in the Caucasus (IPAC) run by Associate Professor Dan Maliniak. The Midwest offered a unique opportunity for students to exhibit several projects at the Conference. Read more about their presentations.

More than 80 undergraduates have applied for Charles Center Honors Fellowships for summer 鈥24, marking surging interest in a program that provides up to $4,000 to rising seniors to conduct ten full-time weeks of research.

Remembering David Dessler

The Government Department recently learned of the death of our former colleague, David Dessler, in April 2023 in Bryan, Texas. He was an extremely kind, generous, and charming person who always went out of his way to welcome new faculty members to the department and college.

Students Put Their Class Knowledge to the Test in DC

Last semester, a senior seminar class had the unique opportunity to learn from Professor Stiefel, the Director for Biodefense on the National Security Council. The course was entitled "Politics of Global Health," and after accumulating knowledge over the semester, students traveled to DC for their final, which was a tabletop simulation modeled on the work of the NSC.

Remembering Professor Emeritus of Government Roger Smith

The Department of Government recently learned of the death of Professor Emeritus of Government Roger Smith on November 28, 2022. Roger attended Harvard University before receiving his MA and PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. He joined the faculty of 麻豆破解版 in 1967 and taught for 34 years before retiring in 2001.

Government Department alumni receive Roberta Sigel Award from the International Society of Political Psychology (ISPP) for Best Conference Paper

Dr. Allison Anoll 鈥09, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Vanderbilt University, and Dr. Drew Engelhardt 鈥13, Assistant Professor of Political Science at University of North Carolina, Greensboro, received the 2022 ISPP award for their paper, 鈥淎 Drop in the Ocean: How Priors Anchor Attitudes Toward the American Carceral State.鈥 Their award-winning ISPP conference paper, currently under review for publication, helps to explain both race and gender gaps in evaluations of the police, prisons, and American court system.

In Memoriam Zhykierra Guy 鈥23

The faculty, staff, and students of the Department of Government are saddened to learn of the death of Zhykierra (鈥淶hy鈥) Guy 鈥23. On August 5th, Zhy was found in Henrico in the passenger seat of a car that had been struck by gunfire. Her death is being investigated as a homicide.

Build Back Better: The Challenge of Selling a Hybrid on Capitol Hill

In an op-ed for The Hill (January 26, 2022), Chris Howard, the Harriman Professor of Government & Public Policy, highlighted the hybrid design of Build Back Better. It is financed like public assistance but distributes benefits widely like social insurance. If advocates want Build Back Better to have a fighting chance in the Senate, they need to explain why the country should adopt this new approach to social policy. In a January 20, 2022 letter to the editor of The New York Times, Associate Professor of Government Rani Mullen argues that the choice between collaborating with the Taliban and facilitating Afghanistan鈥檚 collapse is a false one; the United States should pursue a more nuanced foreign policy that includes targeting Taliban leaders who are terrorists while providing humanitarian assistance.
