Retention, Promotion, and Tenure Committee

The Arts & Sciences Advisory Committee on Retention, Promotion, and Tenure (RPT) consists of six tenured faculty members, two each from Areas I, II, and III. Members are elected for three-year terms, with two terms expiring annually. The Committee’s co-chairs are typically the members whose terms will be expiring at the end of the current academic year. Chairs set the schedule, find a meeting space, arrange for substitutes, and liaise with the Dean.

The Committee reviews all recommendations made by departments and programs of Arts & Sciences concerning the retention, promotion, and tenure of tenure-eligible faculty. The Committee's written reports are forwarded to the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences and become part of the dossier used by senior administration of the College in making their recommendations.

Meetings begin after fall break for tenure considerations. They are typically two hours long and cover two cases. Tenure cases must be completed before Thanksgiving break. Several promotion cases are completed before semester break. The remaining cases are completed by early February. Occasionally, tenure hires are considered in late spring or late August.
